Hallie is a surprisingly shy girl. She doesn't really do well in big crowds, or when a lot of attention is on her. That's why she loves working in the library; it's quiet, and hardly anyone ever goes there. And when people are there, they hardly ever talk to her. She's used to being invisible; it comes naturally to her. And, she kind of likes it. She doesn't have hardly any drama, because she doesn't have hardly any friends. She's okay with it, it's what keeps her in control.
If you manage to get to know her well enough, you'll see that Hallie is kind of a goofball. She has a bunch of ridiculous facial expressions that she uses regularly, along with a bunch of idioms and sayings that make no sense. She makes them up off the top of her head, specifically to make herself laugh. Needless to say, a lot of people think she's a complete freak. Maybe they're just jealous they can't come up with idioms off the tops of their head.
She's never had a boyfriend, and doesn't really know how to get one. She wore glasses and headgear since she was in the seventh grade, and this is the first year she's going without both. She's a little self conscious about her looks now; she's not used to not having headgear and glasses to hide behind. She still, to this day, has no idea how to do her own hair or makeup. Occasionally she'll try, but it never really works out well.
All in all, she's a sweet kid. She tries not to get in the way, and usually succeeds. There have only been a few run ins with trouble, but they weren't too bad. She's never been drunk or done drugs. In fact, she never breaks the rules. The worst she's done was have a really overdue library book.
History:
As I've said before, Hallie is used to being invisible. Heck, she's been that way her entire life. Things were looking good for her until about the second grade, when she started a horrible habit of biting her nails and sucking her thumb. This was due to her parents' divorce; kids often pick up bad habits to help deal with the sudden loss of a parent. She stuttered badly, too. Eventually, she got over these habits but the stuttering does come out every once in a while.
Biting her nails and sucking her thumb had given her teeth a real run for their money; by the fifth grade she looked like a horse. But, the dentists couldn't do anything about it until all of her baby teeth had grown in, and by that time she was in the seventh grade; and her teeth were worse. She was given braces and a mandatory headgear that she had to wear all the time. Imagine what this could do to a girl's self esteem- especially if she wasn't very pretty to begin with.
Hallie took comfort in doing her homework assignments; her grades seemed to be the only thing she could really control. She developed the vocabulary of a college graduate by the time she was a freshman in high school. Also, freshman year was the year she was given glasses to wear all the time. Her eyesight had gotten pathetically low. Unfortunately, it wasn't until the summer after junior year that she was able to get her headgear off and replaced with a nightly retainer, and her glasses replaced with contacts.
Without these things, Hallie can't help but feel naked. This is her senior year, and she must go into it without her mask to hide behind. She plans on trying to stay as undercover as possible, and keep only the friends she's already made. Anything new would probably freak her out even more than she already is. This is her year to focus on getting into a good college, and setting her future straight.
Other:
Without contacts, Hallie is legally blind. Her parents are planning on surprising her for her eighteenth birthday with laser eye surgery! But, shh! Don't tell. (:
